History of the Community of Practice
The Community of Practice is funded through the Community Food Action Initiative and is a project of the Provincial Manager, Food Security with the Population and Public Health Team at the BC Centre for Disease Control, a part of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). It was identified as a strategy in the 2016-2018 Health Authority Food Security Plan to “build civil society’s organizational capacity to work with local governments and to improve local food security”. The health authorities identified a community of practice as a potential activity for this. PHSA and the health authorities originally partnered with the BC Food Systems Network to help implement the strategy. An initial needs assessment showed a CoP as a top rated activity requested by those working in food security across the province. The first CoP call was held on December 7, 2016. In 2018, the CoP transitioned to be part of the BC Food Security Gateway, also a PHSA initiative that is focused on knowledge sharing and collaboration, and is now facilitated by its co-managers.
